Australian Parliament supports new gun and hate crime laws
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Bills yet to be voted by Senate, with opposition to gun law likely from conservative Liberal-National Coalition.

Following a mass shooting at a Jewish festival in Sydney, Australian lawmakers have proposed stricter gun laws and anti-hate crime measures. The House of Representatives approved a national gun buyback scheme and enhanced background checks, with the Senate set to vote soon. While the gun laws are expected to pass with support from the Greens, the conservative Liberal-National Coalition is likely to oppose them. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke emphasized the need for a comprehensive government response to hate-driven violence.
