Guatemala’s President Declares State of Emergency After Prison Riots

Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arevalo declared a state of emergency after gang members took hostages in three prisons and killed seven police officers in a reprisal attack. The emergency order grants security forces greater authority and was issued in response to riots caused by restrictions on gang leaders. Arevalo vowed to continue the fight against gangs despite the violence, with the army remaining on the streets to crack down on gang members.
