South African official says drills with Russia, Iran, China and others key to protecting ‘maritime economic activities’.

South Africa has initiated weeklong naval drills with Russia, Iran, and China, termed “Will for Peace 2026,” to address global maritime tensions and ensure the safety of shipping lanes. Captain Nndwakhulu Thomas Thamaha emphasized the importance of cooperation among BRICS nations amid rising geopolitical conflicts, particularly following recent U.S. actions against Venezuela. Despite U.S. criticism, South Africa’s Deputy Defence Minister Bantu Holomisa stated the exercises were planned before current tensions and urged focus on BRICS collaboration. The drills include participation from multiple countries, showcasing a united front among BRICS members against perceived external pressures.
