Three Calgary restaurant owners, Manikandan Kasinathan, Chandramohan Marjak, and Mary Roche, were sentenced to 90 days in jail for financially abusing their immigrant employees, along with 18 months of probation and a $44,000 restitution. They coerced their employees, who moved from India as temporary foreign workers, into paying inflated fees for immigration assessments, under threat of deportation. The victims endured long work hours in substandard living conditions and reported verbal and physical abuse. The defense’s claims that payments were for other expenses were rejected by the judge, who found the defendants guilty of fraud.
