Matthew Heath, a U.S. Marine held captive in Venezuela for two years, described his wrongful detention under Nicolás Maduro’s regime, including torture techniques used against him. Arrested in September 2020, Heath was accused of espionage and terrorism but was released in October 2022 in a prisoner swap. He highlighted the dire conditions for other detained Americans and urged President Trump to intervene for their release. Heath’s family had previously appealed to the Biden administration for urgent action following his suicide attempt.
