Officer Deaths in Line of Duty Reach Lowest Levels Since WWII
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The number of U.S. law enforcement officer fatalities in the line of duty dropped significantly in 2025, reaching the lowest levels since World War II, with 111 deaths compared to 148 in 2024. Firearm-related fatalities decreased by 15%, marking the lowest total in over a decade, while traffic-related deaths fell nearly 23%. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund attributes these declines to increased roadside safety measures and changes in policing tactics. Although overall fatalities decreased, incidents of officers being shot on duty rose slightly from 342 to 347 in 2025.
