Judge Rejects Louisville Police Reform Plan with DOJ

A federal judge in Kentucky dismissed Louisville’s proposed settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding police reforms after the DOJ withdrew its support. The Justice Department had previously canceled consent decrees aimed at reducing police racial bias in Louisville and Minneapolis, following investigations triggered by the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. Although the court ruling emphasizes local responsibility for police reform, Louisville has begun implementing changes, such as banning no-knock warrants. Former officer Brett Hankison was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for excessive force related to the Taylor case.
