Rami Makhlouf, a billionaire cousin of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, criticized calls for federalism by loyalist religious leader Ghazal Ghazal amid recent protests in Syria. He warned that such demands could lead the Alawite community down a dangerous path and urged Syrians to remain calm. Protests erupted in Latakia and Tartus following a deadly mosque attack in Homs, with Ghazal advocating for political federalism and international protection. The new Syrian administration is tightening security and addressing unrest linked to remnants of the ousted regime.
