Malaysian Court Denies Najib’s House Arrest Request
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

High Court says a royal document allowing the ex-PM’s transfer to house arrest was not valid.

A Malaysian court dismissed former Prime Minister Najib Razak’s attempt to serve his corruption sentence at home, ruling that a royal order permitting this was invalid as it lacked consultation with the pardons board. Najib, imprisoned since August 2022 for his role in the 1MDB scandal, plans to appeal the decision. The court’s ruling reinforces public faith in the judiciary amid ongoing corruption trials against Najib, who faces additional charges related to the scandal. His original 12-year sentence was reduced to six years last year, with a release date set for August 2028.
