New Zealand has no seals or sea lions in zoos or aquariums following the death of Ōrua, the last fur seal in captivity. Auckland Zoo announced that the 20-year-old subantarctic fur seal was euthanised due to health concerns and habitat deterioration. Ōrua had lived at the zoo for nearly two decades after being rescued. The decision to euthanise was described as “extremely difficult” by the zoo.
