The International Criminal Court has sentenced Sudanese militia leader Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, to 20 years in prison for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Darfur civil war from 2003 to 2004. Convicted on 27 counts, Kushayb was a prominent figure in the Janjaweed militia, responsible for widespread atrocities, including genocide against non-Arab populations. His sentencing comes amid ongoing violence in Darfur, where the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, linked to the Janjaweed, continue to perpetrate ethnic cleansing. The ICC aims to promote retribution and deterrence, addressing the long-lasting impacts of the conflict.
