Lithuania has declared a state of emergency due to smuggler balloons from Belarus disrupting aviation, leading to the closure of Vilnius airport. The balloons, reportedly used by smugglers transporting cigarettes, have been deemed a “hybrid attack” by Belarus, an ally of Russia. Lithuania, a NATO member supporting Ukraine against Russia, has asked parliament to grant military powers to address the situation, allowing the army to restrict access, search vehicles and people, and detain suspects. Belarus denies responsibility and accuses Lithuania of provocations, including sending a drone with “extremist material”. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned the balloon incursions as “completely unacceptable”, noting a worsening situation at the border.
