Judge rules Alberta independence referendum violates constitutional rights
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

An Alberta judge ruled that a proposed referendum on Alberta’s separation from Canada violates the Charter and Treaty rights, shortly after the provincial government introduced Bill 14 to end the court proceedings. Justice Colin Feasby criticized the government’s attempt to legislate changes that would preempt the court’s decision, arguing it undermines justice. The court found that Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act did not permit a referendum on independence, and the proposed bill would alter this provision. Feasby emphasized the importance of allowing the court to address legal implications for the public regarding Alberta’s potential secession.
