Southern Phone Company has been fined $2.5 million for violating anti-scam laws, which allowed scammers to control customers’ mobile numbers and access bank accounts, resulting in significant financial losses. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) noted that 20 Australians collectively lost $393,000 due to these breaches. In addition to the fine, Southern Phone must undergo an independent review and implement enhanced security measures over the next three years. ACMA highlighted the need for telcos to strengthen their defenses against such vulnerabilities, which scammers exploit regularly.
