A campaign is underway to designate the ByWard Market as a national historic site in celebration of its 200th anniversary, with city staff recommending approval for the federal nomination. Although the status offers no legal protection, it could enhance tourism and result in a bronze plaque, adding prestige to the market as a cultural meeting point. City officials believe this designation could encourage heritage preservation and boost funding opportunities. The application process may take up to two years, aiming for completion by 2027.
