The Supreme Court of India has decided to examine the framing of guidelines to protect women’s rights during menstruation, following a disturbing incident in Haryana where women sanitation workers were forced to provide photographic proof of menstruation. Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan expressed concern over the prevalence of ‘period-shaming,’ emphasizing the need for dignity and privacy. The court issued a notice to the Centre and acknowledged a petition from the Supreme Court Bar Association, highlighting the urgent necessity for enforceable guidelines. The Haryana government confirmed an inquiry and actions taken against those responsible for the incident.
