Overfishing in the Mediterranean and Black Sea has reached its lowest level in a decade, as reported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The percentage of overfished stocks has decreased to 52% from 87% ten years ago, attributed to improved management and the expansion of aquaculture, which now accounts for over 45% of the region’s aquatic food output. The report highlights a 25% increase in biomass of evaluated commercial species and a significant reduction in fishing pressure. Leading countries in aquaculture production include Turkiye, Egypt, and Greece, contributing to food security and coastal livelihoods.
