Hong Kong Fire: The Use of Bamboo Scaffolding
Should Bamboo Scaffolding Be Banned?

A devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Hong Kong has resulted in at least 65 fatalities and 290 missing individuals, with three arrests made amid ongoing investigations. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of bamboo scaffolding, a traditional construction method still prevalent in the region, despite its flammability and associated risks. Following this tragedy, the Hong Kong Development Bureau has mandated that 50% of new public projects use metal scaffolding to enhance safety, while private projects can still opt for bamboo. The local bamboo scaffolding workers’ union opposes phasing out bamboo, citing safety management issues as the primary cause of past accidents.
