Over 100 Artworks Missing from Federal Indigenous Art Collection

Officials from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) are attempting to locate over 100 unaccounted works of Indigenous art from a federal collection, valued at approximately $14.4 million. An audit revealed that 132 pieces are missing after the collection was temporarily moved during renovations in 2022. While some pieces have been located and others were identified as reproductions, the department claims these works are not officially deemed missing. CIRNAC has accepted audit recommendations to improve record-keeping and management of the collection.
