Uber and WeRide Launch Driverless Robotaxi Service in UAE
Uber and WeRide have begun deploying fully autonomous vehicles for their robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi, specifically in select areas of Yas Island. Initially launched with safety drivers in December 2024, the driverless option can be requested via the Uber app. The WeRide GXR vehicles feature over 20 sensors and can accommodate five passengers, while Uber manages operations alongside local taxi operator Tawasul Transport. Plans to expand this service to 15 more cities, including in Europe, are underway.
