Nearly 35 million people ‘projected to face severe food insecurity’, including ‘famine-like conditions’.

The World Food Programme (WFP) warns that nearly 35 million people in northern Nigeria will face severe food insecurity from May to September 2026, the highest recorded since monitoring began. Borno State is particularly affected, with a projected 15,000 facing catastrophic hunger. Armed violence and aid cuts exacerbate the crisis, while malnutrition rates soar, especially among children. International aid challenges threaten to worsen the situation further.
