Ontario’s Supporting Children and Students Act (Bill 33), recently passed by Education Minister Paul Calandra’s Progressive Conservative government, grants the province greater authority to oversee school boards deemed to be failing. This legislation empowers the government to intervene in school boards, with five already under provincial control. Former WECDSB director Paul Picard noted that past provincial supervision helped address financial mismanagement, though it limited trustee input. Current trustee Lisa Soulliere expressed that improved communication with the ministry could have facilitated better outcomes during past interventions.
