Ottawa postpones gun buyback program for retailers with banned stock
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

OTTAWA — The federal government’s compensation program for retailers holding banned firearms has been delayed, with no new timeline provided, as it prepares to launch a buyback program for individual gun owners by year-end. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree’s office confirmed the postponement, while industry representatives cited an “indefinite delay.” The Liberals have faced ongoing challenges with their firearms ban initiative, which has expanded to over 2,500 banned models since 2020. The amnesty for owners of prohibited firearms has been extended to October 2026, as businesses continue to struggle with the impacts of these regulations.
