Government Proposes Law Change to Address Federal Error with Veterans
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Carney government’s budget legislation includes an amendment that veterans’ lawyers argue aims to obscure a long-standing error resulting in overcharges for long-term care. The proposed change, buried in a 637-page act, seeks to retroactively redefine “province” to exclude territories, possibly halting a class-action lawsuit for damages brought by veterans. Critics, including legal representatives Malcolm Ruby and Michel Drapeau, contend this move is an attempt to evade accountability for significant financial overcharges dating back to 1998. Despite government claims that the amendment clarifies existing laws, Drapeau asserts that retroactively altering legal definitions undermines legal integrity.
