Tsinghua University has amassed 4,986 AI and machine learning patents from 2005 to 2024, surpassing the combined total of MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard. In 2023 alone, it secured over 900 patents, while China now holds more than half of all active global AI patents. Although the US remains dominant in influential AI patents and notable models, China’s share of elite AI researchers has grown significantly from 10% in 2019 to 26% in 2022.
