Indigenous man receives lenient penalty for breaching sex assault sentence
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

An Indigenous offender, Nelson Lesage, was sentenced to house arrest in July 2024 for sexually assaulting a woman while she slept with her fiancé. Despite acknowledging the leniency of his sentence, Lesage violated his house arrest conditions multiple times, including being found passed out at another residence. Although the judge warned that future violations could lead to incarceration, Lesage received no jail time after his recent breach. His case highlights ongoing issues surrounding sentencing for sexual violence in the Northwest Territories.
