30 Confirmed Dead in Congo Landslide Involving Miners
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A landslide at a semi-industrial copper mine in southeastern Congo has resulted in at least 30 confirmed deaths, with around 20 others critically injured. The incident was reportedly triggered by panic due to gunfire from military personnel at the site, causing miners to pile on top of each other. An independent investigation into the military’s involvement has been called for, amid ongoing issues of unsafe conditions in the country’s artisanal mining sector. Congo, the world’s largest cobalt producer, faces accusations of child labor and corruption in its mining industry.
