Brett Tetanish, a volunteer firefighter with 35 years of experience, witnessed an unprecedented fire in Newport Station, N.S., where about 20 dogs were rescued from a single-storey home, although one did not survive. The fire, reported around 6:30 p.m. AT, was contained to the kitchen, with accidental cause still unclear, and led to two neighbors being treated for smoke inhalation. Approximately 40 firefighters responded, with many focusing on caring for the dogs using makeshift oxygen masks. Veterinary technicians assisted in transporting the dogs to emergency clinics in Halifax.
