Judge rules states cannot be forced to revoke SNAP benefits

A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration’s claim that states were “unauthorized” to issue full SNAP benefits was unfounded. U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a temporary restraining order preventing the administration from reversing the benefits and mandated the release of emergency funds for SNAP by Thursday. Although the government shutdown is nearing an end, the ruling supports Democratic state officials who began distributing benefits. The USDA had initially directed states to issue full benefits but later retracted that guidance, prompting the judge’s decision.
