Research Identifies Methods to Prevent Seagull Food Theft

A study by the University of Exeter found that shouting is the most effective way to deter herring gulls from stealing food, as nearly half of the gulls exposed to a recording of a male voice shouting flew away within a minute. In contrast, only 15% of gulls fled when the same voice spoke calmly, while 70% remained near food when exposed to birdsong. Researchers emphasized that intimidation can be achieved without physical harm, highlighting the need for peaceful deterrent methods. Dr. Neeltje Boogert noted that gulls respond to vocal tone, a trait previously observed only in domesticated animals.
