McKnight Boulevard in Calgary honors William McKnight, a distinguished Canadian flying ace in the Royal Air Force during World War II, who downed 17 German planes and was credited as Canada’s highest-scoring ace of the Battle of Britain. Born in Edmonton and raised in Calgary, McKnight went missing in action at 23 years old during a mission over the English Channel. Local historian Shelly McElroy is writing a book about McKnight, inspired by discovering his story through a family connection. A presentation on McKnight’s life will be held at the Central Public Library on November 18.
