Morocco Introduces Holiday After UN Approves Western Sahara Plan
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Morocco has declared 31 October as Unity Day to celebrate the UN Security Council’s resolution supporting its plan for the disputed Western Sahara, emphasizing national unity and territorial integrity. The resolution, backed by 11 countries including the US, advocates for genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the best solution to the 50-year conflict, while the Polisario Front seeks independence. Despite several ceasefires and UN peacekeeping efforts since 1991, a long-awaited referendum on the region’s status has not occurred. The African Union recognizes Western Sahara’s independence, but many nations, including the US and several European countries, support Morocco’s claims.
