Billion-dollar disaster data managed by private entity

Climate Central has revived the billion-dollar disaster dataset previously managed by NOAA, which quantifies the economic impact of climate change and severe weather events, after its shutdown by the Trump administration hindered tracking of disaster effects. The dataset, now led by former NOAA scientist Adam Smith, indicates 14 billion-dollar disasters in the U.S. since the shutdown, with losses exceeding $101 billion, highlighting the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related events.
