Slovak Court Sentences Poet to 21 Years for Shooting PM

The populist government has blamed the 2024 attack on ‘hatred’ spread by opposition and critical media.

A Slovak court has sentenced 72-year-old Juraj Cintula to 21 years for a terror attack after he shot Prime Minister Robert Fico, claiming moral despair drove him to protest government actions. Fico, who accused the opposition of fomenting hatred, continues to face criticism for authoritarian policies and alignment with Russia since the shooting.
