The Kingia australis grass tree, which grows extremely slowly at about 1.5cm per year, can reach heights of up to 8m and is distinct from the more common Xanthorrhoea grass trees in Western Australia. Known as Balga in the Noongar language, these iconic plants are resilient, thriving in poor soils and adapted to survive wildfires, with their living growth point protected underground.
