How Burning Man VR rebuilt after Microsoft shut it down

Initially a response to the 2020 COVID-19 cancellation, the virtual Burning Man on Altspace attracted 13,000 visitors and evolved into BRCvr, a permanent VR presence for the festival. Following Altspace’s shutdown, creators Athena Demos and Doug Jacobson developed their own platform, BurnerSphere, to preserve Burning Man’s spirit without commercial influence.
