Winston Churchill recounted an encounter from 1895 with statesman William Harcourt while he was a young cavalry officer. During their discussion on significant issues, Churchill expressed his curiosity about future events by asking, “What will happen then?” Harcourt responded with a sense of Victorian complacency, stating, “My dear Winston, the experiences of a long life have convinced me that nothing ever happens.”
