In summary: GWS Giants captain Toby Greene has been unable to overturn a one-game ban.The AFL tribunal has upheld a rough conduct charge against Carlton defender Jordan Boyd. What’s next? Greene will miss the game against the Brisbane Lions on Anzac Day.

GWS captain Toby Greene has received his eighth career suspension after failing to clear himself of a one-game ban at the tribunal.

Greene will be absent from the Giants’ match against the Brisbane Lions on Anzac Day, marking his first suspension since the infamous umpire incident in a 2021 elimination final against Sydney.

The tribunal upheld a rough conduct charge against Carlton defender Jordan Boyd during Saturday’s game.

This suspension brings the total number of games missed due to suspension in Greene’s 221-game career to 15.

The Giants star went for a mark but made contact with Boyd’s head in a collision, resulting in a rough conduct charge.

Boyd quickly got up and continued playing after receiving a free kick.

Greene’s actions were deemed as careless conduct, medium impact, and high contact by the tribunal.

Tribunal chairman Jeff Gleeson noted that Greene admitted to the high bump.

Greene stated that he was focused on the ball and only realized too late that he wouldn’t be able to mark it.

His legal representative argued that Greene’s actions were reasonable given the circumstances.

While Greene will miss the upcoming match, teammate Jesse Hogan’s one-game suspension for striking was dismissed, allowing him to play.

Hogan was initially suspended by the match review officer for intentional conduct, low impact, and high contact, but the tribunal panel disagreed, citing insufficient force in Hogan’s actions.

Hogan acknowledged the incident with Young and felt it was resolved amicably after the game.

GWS football boss Jason McCartney commented on the tribunal outcomes, expressing disappointment over Greene’s suspension but satisfaction with Hogan’s case dismissal.
