Universal digital ‘BritCards’ on an app could soon be used to prove who you are

A proposed universal digital identity scheme, dubbed ‘BritCard,’ may soon require individuals to show an app-based identity card for jobs and housing, according to a policy paper by Labour Together submitted to Number 10. This free, mandatory electronic credential would be stored on the GOV.UK Wallet app, enabling employers, banks, and landlords to verify a person’s right to work or rent. Labour Together argues that the card could help reduce visa overstayers and benefit fraud, with 80% of Britons reportedly supporting the initiative.
