The USNS Harvey Milk, a Navy vessel named after the prominent gay rights activist and Navy veteran, will be renamed, with no reason provided by the Navy. This announcement coincides with Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ achievements, and follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s directive to eliminate cultural awareness months within the military. Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials, was assassinated in 1978, and his legacy is commemorated in various ways, including the naming of vessels in the John Lewis class.
