Bangladesh: Political parties reject Muhammad Yunus's extended time frame, demand election by December

At least 20 political parties in Bangladesh, including the BNP led by former PM Khaleda Zia, have rejected chief adviser Muhammad Yunus’s proposal to delay national elections until between December 2025 and June 2026, insisting elections should be held by December this year. While most parties demand a swift election, three, including Jamaat-e-Islami, support Yunus’s extended timeframe. Yunus remains hopeful of reaching a consensus on a ‘July Charter’ for political transition after the Hasina government’s fall.
