A flesh-eating parasite called New World Screwworm is advancing toward the US border in Texas, prompting Washington to halt cattle imports from Mexico. This parasitic fly lays eggs in wounds on warm-blooded animals, feeding on their flesh and potentially leading to death if untreated. Although primarily affecting livestock, humans can also be infested, particularly vulnerable populations; to combat this threat, the US Department of Agriculture is investing $21 million to produce sterile screwworms in Mexico, aiming to control the spread and mitigate economic losses.
