Nick Clegg says asking artists for use permission would ‘kill’ the AI industry

As UK policymakers deliberate on AI regulations, Nick Clegg, former deputy prime minister and Meta executive, warned that requiring artist consent for AI training could “kill” the industry. Clegg emphasized the impracticality of obtaining consent from all creators, highlighting a proposed amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill that seeks transparency in AI training data usage, which has garnered support from notable artists but was recently rejected by Parliament. Beeban Kidron, the amendment’s proponent, insists that the fight for copyright transparency is not over as the bill returns to the House of Lords.
