In 2024, over 1.65 lakh Schengen visa applications from India were rejected, causing a financial loss of approximately Rs 136 crore in non-refundable fees, with India ranking third globally in this regard. Of the 11.08 lakh applications submitted, only 5.91 lakh were approved, resulting in a rejection rate of nearly 15%, notably impacting tourism and business travel. The highest rejection costs came from France, Switzerland, and Germany, prompting calls for more transparent visa processes as demand for Schengen visas continues to rise among Indian applicants.
