A family living in a rental home plagued by mould struggled to move out, as it was the only residence they had ever known with their baby, who tragically died there. The discovery of more mould in two bedrooms prompted them to leave the Waihī property in September, a decision described as “bittersweet” during a Tenancy Tribunal hearing in March, where the woman alleged that the landlord failed to maintain the home according to building codes and health and safety standards. Notably, the couple’s baby daughter passed away at the property in mid-2023.
