The Taliban government in Afghanistan has indefinitely banned chess, citing concerns that it may promote gambling, as stated by Atal Mashwani, the spokesman for the sports directorate. This decision reflects the regime’s ongoing enforcement of strict interpretations of Islamic law, which has already led to restrictions on other sports, particularly for women. Local cafe owner Azizullah Gulzada expressed disappointment, noting that chess provided a social activity for young people in Kabul, despite its prohibition being respected due to religious considerations.
