Soviet-era probe meant for Venus crashes off Indonesia

A Soviet-era space probe, Kosmos 482, launched in 1972, has re-entered Earth’s atmosphere and crashed into the Indian Ocean, according to Russian authorities. The Russian space agency Roscosmos reported that the probe, which failed to escape Earth’s gravity and orbited for 53 years, entered the atmosphere at 4:24 PM AEST and landed west of Jakarta, Indonesia. Despite warnings that it could survive re-entry, Roscosmos confirmed that “Kosmos 482 no longer exists,” and no information about potential damage or debris has been provided.
