This decision drew sharp criticism from Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who condemned it as disgraceful and called for a congressional commission to oversee such appointments. Hayden, who previously led the Enoch Pratt Free Library, expressed her pride in breaking barriers within the library profession.
