As the sun set over Lake Turkana, Senait Mebrehtu mourned her 14-year-old daughter Hiyab, who drowned while attempting to cross the lake to reach Kenya via a smuggler’s route. Hiyab was traveling with her sister, who survived the capsizing of their overloaded boat, which was operated by traffickers who exploit desperate migrants fleeing Eritrea’s military conscription and persecution. The use of Lake Turkana as a crossing point has increased due to heightened patrols on land, prompting warnings about the dangers of the journey and the negligence of smugglers.
