I’m a dentist — here’s the truth about rinsing after brushing your teeth

This article discusses the importance of proper tooth brushing techniques.

Instead of rinsing after brushing, dental experts now recommend simply spitting out excess toothpaste. Brittany Seymour, a representative for the American Dental Association, advises brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

Margherita Fontana from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry explains that rinsing immediately after brushing can wash away the fluoride left on the teeth. It is recommended to wait 20 minutes before rinsing or take a small sip of water if necessary.

For those who prefer to rinse after brushing, using a fluoride-containing mouthwash is a suitable alternative. Studies have shown that less rinsing leads to fewer cavities and decay, particularly for individuals with high-sugar diets.

Children should use a minimal amount of fluoride toothpaste to prevent swallowing. Pediatric dentist Scott Cashion recommends spitting out excess toothpaste without rinsing to retain the protective benefits of fluoride overnight.

Drinking excessive water throughout the day can also be harmful to teeth. Saliva is essential for dental health as it contains minerals and proteins that protect enamel and prevent decay. Constantly diluting saliva by drinking water can reduce these benefits.
